Eeerr... Letīs see how can I say this without sounding... rude, or anything alike but Iīve seen other representations on winged big cats like this and, to my view, they all share the same design problem Big catsī bones are supposed to be way thicker and thus heavier than the bones that birds have, even in relation with the size of the bone itself. In a larger scale, this means that a big cat skeleton is also heavier than that of a bird, in relation to its size as well. Therefore, if we wanted a big cat fly, (s)he would need yet bigger wings... with the strength that it demands to bat them up and down
This makes me think of some theories on the largest pterodactylus (those prehistoric flying reptilians), which hold that their wings mustīve been so heavy that those creatures could not actually bat them (save for the smallest specimens). Paleontologists suggest that those animals would actually crawl to the top of a cliff from where they glided, rather than taking off from the ground itself. And it seems that modern condors and the largest buzzards share a rather similar problem.
The same theory would apply to these winged big cats. If they really existed, not only would they need yet bigger wings than the ones they are often provided with, but also batting those wings would demand such a tremendous degree of strength that I doubt that, as pterodactylus, they could actually bat them. Rather, they would keep them wide open in flight, still, or almost still. Wings are supposed to be thin, light and flexible (even the wings of aircraft are) but carrying a weigh like that of the body of a big cat may be too much for them.
And another factor to take into consideration for all the handicaps that wings have to stand: g-forces...
Will I regret having typed this?... Probably yes... My apologies in advance, anyway XP
Awww man Alan! You just killed spirit of this image XD i do get your point on the fact that winds are too small for such heavy body, but such animal never existed nor will exist so char can be even made from air XD
I knew that Iīd regret my comment XP and I really am sorry about it :/
But anyway, even though these characters are supposed to be fictional and thus we can do whatever we want with them, Iīm afraid that I personally disapprove of the idea of making them so fictional or sci-fi-like that I cannot actually believe them :I To me, they need to have certain degree of realism, and not just when it comes to their physical look (a big cat or whatever).
Okay, in order to fly, these big cats would need to be more light weight than their real, wingless "on-land based" counterparts, but that would go against their strength. I think that itīs really hard to find a good balance between strength and been light in weight, or agile. Just look at cheetahs: light, fast yet not that strong and resistant as other big cats of roughly their same size, like cougars/pumas, jaguars or... ahem, leopards X) To me, these "medium-sized" big cats (cougars, jaguars and leopards) have the best balance between strength, agility and resistance among all the big cats :3
And the same that Iīm saying about these winged cats can I also say about Pegasus, that mythological winged horse, you know... I personally am for certain degree of realism in more than one field (physics and way of life, or physical limitations) for me to "trust" or like these winged creatures. So "obsessed" am I with realism that I also try to adapt it to Disneyīs Lion King characters when it comes to their habits or way of life
In any case, this is just a matter of personal opinion or taste, and no way should it be taken so seriously ^^'
There is nothing to regret, i also like when char normally is into realism but then tell this to dragon lovers or like you said yourself, pegas drawers I just think that there is not point in drilling some stuff because (like i said before) some stuff never existed so we can say that their structure might be very different and because its magical animal, i can even say that they are created from magic (no bigger physic) and gawd knows from what else XD So i dont mind sharing opinion or having different taste, its just if more ppl will throw their opinions and tastes then it usually ends on debate or even worse, when people push their opinion into others ^^"
So far i can say- thank you very much for sharing opinion/taste, Alan
